This book explores Wright's lessons on how climate, sustainability, sunlight, modern technology, and passive environmental controls can become the inspiration for excellent design. It highlights a selection of Wright's buildings to show how he dealt with these issues beginning more than a century ago. Topics considered include: passive solar designs and the use of thermal massing (Heurtley House, Hickox House, Hemicycle houses); passive berm insulation (Jacobs House II); passive ventilation systems (Walker House); passive natural light (Larkin Building, Fawcett House); landscaping (Hollyhock House, Martin House); mechanical ventilation (Unity Temple, Johnson Wax, Cheney House, Robie House); climate sensitivity (Taliesin West, Auldbrass, Fallingwater, Florida Southern College); high density urban housing (Francisco Terrace, Price Tower, Charnley House); farm architecture (Romeo and Juliet windmill, Taliesin barns and dairies, Broadacre city); use of natural and local materials (Hillside Home School, Walker House, Auldbrass, Heurtley House); high-tech solutions (Unity temple, textile block construction, thermopane glass, modular prefab) Some of Wright's ideas remain provocative, and comparisons between his concepts and current Green strategies and examples will be made. The book will also look at Wright's use of landscape as well.
